Day 26 after quitting vapingIt never took time, it took attention

In shortVaping costs almost no time but a lot of attention: small checks on where the device is, its charge and whether a puff is possible. That background process has been off for nearly four weeks. Give your restless hand something small to hold.

What's happening in your body

Smoking costs a smoker an hour or more a day in breaks. Vaping costs almost no time, because it happens alongside everything else. What it takes is attention. There is a small check every few minutes on where the device is, how much charge it has, whether a puff is possible here, how long until the next one. That background process has been switched off for nearly four weeks, and the hand that ran it is unemployed.

What to expect

Restless fingers and a mild sense of something missing, strongest when the other hand holds a phone. Scrolling and vaping were often one combined habit, and half of it is gone. It is also a sign of something good. The attention is yours again, even if for now it mostly feels like an empty pocket.

Try this

Give the hand a job for the moments when it searches, something small and pocketable, like a pen, a coin or a ring to turn.

What else you could do

At the desk, a stress ball works. For a few days, move the phone to the other hand; it breaks the pairing more effectively than it sounds. And when you notice the reach, name it to yourself and let it pass, the same way as any other cue.
