8-12 hours after your last vapeThe level you kept topped up

In shortEight hours is probably the longest gap your body has had from nicotine, outside of sleep, in a long time. The first full craving tends to arrive now. It peaks and loosens within minutes with or without a puff. The first evening is often the hardest.

What's happening in your body

Nicotine has a half-life of about two hours. A cigarette delivers a spike and then a long fall, but a vape is often used in sips all day, and many small doses keep the level in the blood more even than a few large ones would. Eight hours without one is probably the longest gap your body has had in a long time outside of sleep, and the level is now a small fraction of what it usually is.

What to expect

The first full craving tends to arrive around here. It builds, peaks and loosens within a few minutes, and it does that with or without a puff. The single most useful thing to know about a craving is that it ends by itself. Many people find the first evening the hardest part of the first day, because the evening is where the device used to be busiest.

Try this

Time the next craving on your phone, from the first pull to the moment it eases.

What else you could do

After that, every craving can be held against a number you measured yourself. While you wait for it to pass, move. A few minutes of brisk walking or a flight of stairs takes the edge off. Give your mouth something that takes a while, a carrot, a stick of celery, sugar-free gum. And if it is late, go to bed early. A first evening that ends at ten is shorter than one that ends at one.
