Day 26 after quitting smokingAn hour a day came back

In shortA cigarette takes about five minutes, so at fifteen a day smoking used about an hour and a quarter. That time came back as small gaps through the day, and an empty gap can be a trigger. Decide what fills a five-minute gap.

What's happening in your body

A cigarette takes about five minutes, and that is before the walk outside, the hunt for a lighter, the wait for a colleague. At fifteen a day the smoking alone comes to an hour and a quarter, every day, for years. That time is now unallocated, and it did not return as one block. It came back as a dozen small gaps scattered through the day.

What to expect

Boredom and restless hands in those gaps. After the bus arrives, before the meeting starts, while the kettle boils. An empty slot that used to have a fixed occupant is a trigger in its own right, and it is on the list of the commonest ones. It is also a sign of something good. The time is yours again, even if for now it mostly feels empty.

Try this

Decide this morning what goes into a five-minute gap today, something that fits in a pocket.

What else you could do

A book on your phone, a language app, a stretch, a message to someone you have been meaning to write to. Decide in advance, because in the gap itself the old occupant gets its suggestion in first. For the first weeks, keep something in your hands, a pen, a smooth stone, a rubber ball. And if the gaps really do add up to an hour, give part of it to something bigger that needs a regular slot.
