Day 27 after quitting smokingGums that bleed
What's happening in your body
Here is one that runs against intuition. Smoking suppresses bleeding from the gums, and the more someone smokes, the stronger the effect, so a smoker's gums bleed less than they should even when they are inflamed. The warning sign is muted. In a study of people who stopped, bleeding when the gums were probed increased within four to six weeks, and in another it was still higher three months after stopping. Blood flow in the gums rises once the smoking stops, and the gums start reporting their real condition.
What to expect
A little pink when you brush or floss, possibly for the first time in years. It looks like a new problem. It is an existing one becoming visible, which is the first step to having it treated. Gums that bleed a little when brushed are common and usually settle with good cleaning. See a dentist sooner rather than later if they bleed a lot or on their own, if they are swollen and painful, if a tooth feels loose, or if the bleeding has not settled after a few weeks of careful cleaning.
Try this
Book a dental check and a cleaning, and mention that you have stopped smoking.
What else you could do
Brush gently twice a day with a soft brush and clean between the teeth. Keep brushing where it bleeds rather than avoiding the spot, because the bleeding comes from inflammation that cleaning reduces. Gum disease is more common in smokers, which is one more reason to have your gums looked at now, while they are telling the truth.
