Quit21 vs Kwit: Quit smoking for good
A side-by-side look at Quit21 and Kwit - Quit smoking for good, an app by Kwit SAS of Strasbourg, France, using only what both apps and their developers say publicly. Checked on 31 October 2026. I make Quit21, so read it with that in mind. Where Kwit is stronger, this page says so.
Side by side
| Feature | Quit21 | Kwit - Quit smoking for good! |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Android and iPhone | Android and iPhone |
| Price | Free, with a small banner ad | Free to start, with a Premium upgrade. The App Store lists subscriptions from $6.49 for a week to $127.99 for a year, and a lifetime option at $169.99; the labels and prices do not map cleanly, so check in the app. |
| Popularity | New. On Google Play since October 2026, so few ratings. | Over 1 million installs on Google Play (4.6 from about 20,000 ratings) and 4.7 from about 2,800 ratings on the App Store. Its site claims over 5 million users. |
| What you can quit | Cigarettes, heated tobacco and vaping, each with its own arithmetic | Cigarettes, and also vaping and nicotine replacement (patches, gum), with dose tracking. |
| Daily guidance | A text for every stage: 20 minutes, 8 hours, days 1 to 30, 3 months, 9 months and 1 year. Written separately for smoking and vaping, each with named sources. | Motivational cards you unlock by shaking the phone, tips, an educational library and a programme from thinking about quitting to being smoke-free, described as based on cognitive behavioural therapy. |
| Coaching and community | None. The app is a private, quiet space. | Groups where users share progress, and chat, according to its App Store description. Its own site names users "Kwitters" but does not describe the community feature. |
| Game design | 29 medals and a piggy bank. No levels or points. | Points, levels, achievements and badges. |
| After a slip | A slip subtracts only what was smoked. Totals, medals and pages already read are kept, and the day count restarts. | A diary records cravings, cigarettes smoked and relapses, and the listing mentions relapse prevention. |
| Help with a craving | SOS: your own reasons and a one-minute paced-breathing exercise, then a note of what set it off. | Craving-management tools and guided breathing exercises. |
| Diary and triggers | A daily diary, a log of triggers and a view of when cravings come. | A diary for cravings, cigarettes and relapses. |
| Money, goals and medals | Money saved, cigarettes not smoked, a piggy bank for something you are saving towards, and 29 medals. | Money saved, cigarettes not smoked, life expectancy gained and a health-improvement timeline. |
| Widget | Home-screen widget | Not described on its listings. |
| Languages | English and Ukrainian | English and 10 more on the App Store, including Ukrainian. |
| Account | None | Not stated on its listings. The App Store lists an email address and a user ID as data linked to you. |
| Your data | Stays on the phone and is never sent to the developer. The banner ad is served by Google AdMob, which collects device information such as the advertising ID and an approximate location. You can delete everything in Settings. | As declared by the developer. Google Play: financial info and app info and performance are shared with third parties; personal info, app activity and device IDs are collected; users can request deletion. App Store: email, user ID, product interaction and crash data are linked to you, for analytics, personalisation and app functionality. The two declarations differ, so read both. |
| Ads | A small banner ad on a few screens | Its Google Play description says the app is free and ad-free. |
| Evidence and review | None. Quit21 is not a medical device and its texts have not had a medical review. | Calls itself WHO-approved and WHO-validated, and based on cognitive behavioural therapy and the Transtheoretical Model. Its site links a scientific committee, but I found no published trial of the app, and the WHO claim is not backed up on the pages I read. |
Where Kwit is stronger
- It tracks nicotine replacement such as patches and gum as well as vaping, and lets you taper them. Quit21 does not track nicotine replacement.
- It is game-like: points, levels, achievements and cards you unlock by shaking the phone. If that keeps you going, Quit21 has far less of it.
- It has groups and chat. Quit21 has no community.
- It offers a programme built on a named behavioural method, a large educational library and 11 languages.
- It is far more established, with over 1 million installs on Google Play and its own scientific committee page.
Where Quit21 is different
- Heated tobacco has its own track, and a vape is never converted into an invented "cigarette equivalent".
- It explains the day. Each morning there is a page about what is happening in your body, what to expect and one thing to try, with sources named at the bottom.
- A slip subtracts only what was smoked, and the totals you earned stay.
- There is no community, no chat and no account. Your diary, slips and reasons stay on the phone and are never passed to the advertising code.
- It is deliberately small, with no levels or points, and nothing to subscribe to at the moment.
Which one to choose
- Choose Kwit if you also use patches, gum or a vape and want to taper them, you like a game-like app with a community, and you are happy to pay for Premium.
- Choose Quit21 if you want each day explained with named sources rather than motivational cards, you smoke heated tobacco, or you want an app that needs no account and keeps your data on the phone.
- Use both if you want Kwit's nicotine-replacement tracking and groups alongside a private daily explanation in Quit21. They do not conflict.
Questions
Is Kwit free?
It is free to start and offers a Premium subscription or a lifetime purchase. The App Store lists subscriptions from $6.49 for a week to $127.99 for a year, and a lifetime option at $169.99, with labels that do not map cleanly. Check the current prices in the app.
Does Kwit work for vaping?
Yes. Its listings describe tracking vaping and nicotine replacement and reducing the dose over time. Quit21 also has a separate vaping track with its own arithmetic and daily texts.
Is Kwit really WHO-approved?
The app's listings describe it as WHO-approved or WHO-validated, but the pages I read give no document or reference that supports this. Treat it as the developer's own claim until you see a source.
What is a good alternative to Kwit?
Quit21 is one if you want something quieter: no levels, community or account, each day of quitting explained with named sources, and tracks for cigarettes, heated tobacco and vaping. It is free and keeps your data on the phone.
Is Kwit available on iPhone and Android?
Yes, on both. Quit21 is also on both.
Is Quit21 free?
Yes. It is free and shows a small banner ad on a few screens. Nothing is locked behind a purchase at the moment.
